How to create a file in Rich Text Format

  1. Open a new Word document.
  2. Click the File menu and then click Save As.
  3. In the File name box type the name of the file.
  4. Select Rich Text Format (*.RTF) in the Save as type drop-down menu.
  5. Click the Save button.

How to convert an existing Word document to Rich Text Format

  1. Open the Word document that you want to convert to RTF.
  2. Click File and then click Save As.
  3. Select Rich Text Format (*.RTF) in the Save as type drop-down menu.
  4. Click Save.

Important: In case Hide extensions for known file types is not unchecked on your computer then you may put rtf after the filename to differentiate the .rtf file from the .doc file by the same name. For instance, you are converting mydoc file to rtf, you may rename the file as mydocrtf.
