Detailed description of the .rtf file extension

Two different file types are recorded as using the .rtf file extension.  A detailed description of both file types is shared below.

Rich Text Format (RTF) file

An .rtf file is a Rich Text Format file. Rich Text Format is a document file format developed by the Microsoft Corporation in 1987 that allows exchange of text documents between different operating systems and Word Processors.

An .rtf file is similar to .txt files, however it contains several types of text formatting information, such as font type, bold, custom tabs, italics, and so on. The majority of word processing applications used today have the ability to open and create .rtf files.

How to open an .rtf file

If you use Windows, you may use the following applications to open an .rtf file:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft WordPad
  • Any text editor that supports formatted text

If you use a Mac Operating System, you may use the following applications to open an .rtf file:

  • Microsoft Word 2008
  • Apple Text
  • Apple Pages
  • Nuance OmniPage Pro X

How to create a file in Rich Text Format

  1. Open a new Word document.
  2. Click the File menu and then click Save As.
  3. In the File name box type the name of the file.
  4. Select Rich Text Format (*.RTF) in the Save as type drop-down menu.
  5. Click the Save button.

How to convert an existing Word document to Rich Text Format

  1. Open the Word document that you want to convert to RTF.
  2. Click File and then click Save As.
  3. Select Rich Text Format (*.RTF) in the Save as type drop-down menu.
  4. Click Save.

Important: In case Hide extensions for known file types is not unchecked on your computer then you may put rtf after the filename to differentiate the .rtf file from the .doc file by the same name. For instance, you are converting mydoc file to rtf, you may rename the file as mydocrtf.

.rtf – security report

Just because a file has the.rtf extension, don’t assume the file is safe. Many malware programs are known to spread infection using the .rtf file extension. In case you receive an .rtf email attachment, scan it before downloading the file to your computer.

The .rtf file extension is also known to be used by the ZKSofware FingerPrint Attendance System SKD version 6.0.1.1. Little information is available on this file type, its purpose or behavior.
